Liam’s Story

Liam attends a local primary school and was finding it difficult to cope with the school day. He was experiencing anxiety attacks and his mum reported that he was self-harming. During the academic year, it became evident that his situation was getting worse and, while referrals were made to support his emotional wellbeing, the school felt he needed support straight away.

Using their Opportunities Fund from Walton Charity, the school was able to enrol Liam on a course of art therapy, which supports children to express their unconscious thoughts and feelings through art. It also helps children to communicate complex thoughts and feelings which they might not be able to express through words alone.

Since Liam started the art therapy, his behaviour and emotional wellbeing have improved. He is more positive at school and even has the confidence to take part in a residential trip. As well as supporting Liam with art therapy courses, the school are using their fund to help Liam’s mum cover the cost of the residential trip.

Liam’s school is one of twenty Elmbridge schools which hold a Walton Charity Opportunities Fund.
