Tackling child poverty in Elmbridge

Even before the pandemic, more than 12% of children in Elmbridge were living in poverty. Working with local partners, we are committed to tackling both the symptoms and causes of child poverty in our local area.

Last year, we awarded over £370,000 in grants to support local children and families on low incomes or facing financial hardship - 66% of our total grant funding.

Here’s a snapshot of our impact over last year.

In 2021-22

7 delegated funds totalling more than £27,000 helped local families with essentials such as fresh food, utility bills and school uniforms.

1,712 local children were supported through the Walton & Hersham foodbank.

11 local schools were awarded Opportunities Funds totalling more than £43,000 to support low income families with school-related costs

10 community grants funded learning programmes, art and drama sessions and extra computers for disadvantaged pupils across Elmbridge.

£20,000 raised through our Back to School Appeal helped local families with the cost of school uniforms and shoes.

Finding the money to buy new school uniform is such a worry for many families and this support comes as a huge relief, really helping to take the pressure off.
