Sheltered Housing
Ian’s Story
I was a porter at a London hospital but I had to retire at fifty six due to ill health. I was evicted from the flat that came with my job and I was homeless…I had nothing….all I had was a camp bed and a garden chair.
I ended up at a halfway house in London. It was just terrible. My friends live in Hersham and I spent time using their sofa but I didn’t want to outstay my welcome. They suggested that I should contact Walton Charity because they knew of their sheltered housing.
I was sent an application form for Fenner House and a couple of weeks later I was offered a flat. I just couldn’t believe it. It was the best thing that had happened to me for a long, long time. I feel safe here. I feel secure.
When I came here, I found out that Walton Charity had allotments and I was well pleased about that. I took a plot and got back into gardening again. It gives me so much pleasure and it gives me something to do – another part of independence. It keeps me fit too and I just love it!
