Anna’s Story
For many, the desire to be closer to family drives some important life decisions. In the case of one our residents, Anna, this led her to Mayfield. Mayfield and Fenner House are two of Walton Charity’s alms-houses, located in Walton-on-Thames. They provide affordable, self-contained housing for people aged over 55 who can live independently.
Anna originally came to Walton-on-Thames to visit her daughter and grandchildren. Closeness to family was essential, but the high cost of living in Elmbridge posed a huge barrier, as Elmbridge is the most expensive place to rent in Surrey. That’s when she discovered an advert for Mayfield through James Neave Estate Agents.
Having worked hard throughout her life and relying on a modest pension, she found herself unable to afford the steep housing prices in the area. Surrey is often associated with affluence, but as Anna explains, even though “You think Surrey wouldn’t have a poverty problem, but with the house prices so high, it trickles down, meaning you can’t afford the basics.”
Mayfield provided a solution, allowing her to maintain her independence whilst staying connection to her family. A full calendar of events and activities are hosted at Fenner and Mayfield House, from coffee mornings to beach trips, yoga sessions and gardening clubs. It’s a place where everyone can get involved and build meaningful connections. Anna also actively contributes to the Walton & Hersham Foodbank as a volunteer, as well as The Bridge, which provides longer-term support for working families who are struggling with the rising cost of living.
“Being able to live here means I am part of the community, and it also means I can give back when I can.”
Anna says she also likes the how independent living is supported with safety measures, such as emergency cords, so that help is available if it is needed.
Reflecting on her journey, Anna shares, “Since I was 18, I’ve lived at 40 different addresses, but I am pleased to say that I now feel at home.”
